Kayaking East from South End of 331 Bridge
(Santa Rosa Beach)
Chick's Creek ????
Although there was a light breeze out of the north last Wednesday, I elected to stay on the South side of the Choctawhatchee Bay for this paddle. I drove over to the 331 bridge and put in at the boat ramp, just as the causeway begins on the East side. There is room to park and not be in anybody’s way and the ramp is easy to use.
It was 6 a.m. and still slightly chilly but once I got going I soon warmed up. About ten minutes later the sun peeped over the horizon just north of the Intercoastal Canal. I paddled South and then east along the shore line seeing new construction on at least one lot, which in these days is a ‘sight for sore eyes’.
I had checked out the man-made channels into the Chrysler housing area a couple of times before so I decided to pass them and see if there was anything else to explore. After about 45 minutes of steady but not strenuous paddling, I came round into a bay where a development has a communal beach with a pergola and dock. Just to the west of this is the entrance to a creek that took me back first to the west and then to the south. Several people have docks here and there have been some small fires in the woods and in the marsh in a few places.
Quiet and deep water goes on for I would say about a third of a mile, winding back past a boat ramp at the end of Days Lane. That's where I am thinking I will put in next time so that I can explore further, hopefully as far as the mouth of the Inter-coastal Canal.
Where the creek becomes narrow I got pretty close to a little night heron but was too slow getting the camera out to get a picture. I made the return journey rather quicker, paddling pretty hard once I was out of the creek I was back at the boat ramp in about half an hour.
