Bakeries in Northwest Florida

One of my missions is to find bakeries in Northwest Florida. I love them!

I love the smells of warm bread and donuts, of cake and pastries fresh from the oven, and of sugar sprinkled on oversized cookies. I love pretty little petit fours, the amazing and creative wedding cakes, and chocolate covered anything, but I think my real weakness is all the different varieties of bread. I’m very happy to loaf around the bread counter (sorry about that).

When I was in school in Tampa, there was an old fashioned corner bakery (really, it was on the corner), and I would occasionally stop in on my way home and treat myself to a donut or cookie. It was so yummy, just walking in there. It was also air-conditioned, a must for a central Florida bakery, and I loved just spending a few minutes cooling off before the rest of my walk home (two miles, uphill both ways.) I’m happy to report that after all these years, Housewife Bakery is still there on the corner of North Armenia and Sligh Avenue and is still family owned and operated and not a franchise.

For a while, unless you lived in a big city, the corner bakery was hard to find. Everything, it seemed, went corporate. Some people may think there’s no difference in a grocery store bakery and a small, family-owned one, but believe me, there definitely is.

Bakeries in Northwest Florida offer a variety of specialties; there are cake bakeries, bread bakeries, even cupcake bakeries. Antonio’s is an authentic Italian bakery in Panama City Beach and La Loba’s Bakery in Blue Mountain Beach in South Walton specializes in organic and gluten-free goodies.

Whenever I’m on the road, I try to stop into these havens of sweetness. I probably need a bumper sticker that says I brake for bakeries, but you just never know when you’re going to come across one. So, here’s the start of my list. It will be ongoing since I haven’t found all of the bakeries in Northwest Florida as yet. In fact, I’d be happy for you to help. If you know of a bakery that needs to be showcased, please feel free to write let us know about it.

Click here to tell us about an amazing Northwest Florida bakery you’ve found.

It needs to be a place where you can go (not a home based catering business – sorry) and it should be independently owned, i.e. not a Publix bakery or a mall cookie shop. Also, please let us know if there’s a bakery listed here that has closed.

We’ll expand the list as we get more in, but for now, take a day-trip to a bakery and load up on fresh bread, cake and pastries, and other baked goods and enjoy.

Milton Quality Bakery
6727 Caroline Street, Milton, FL 32570
(850) 623-3676
I stopped in here one day after I'd been to the West Florida Railroad Museum and bought some chocolate topped shortbread cookies. Yum! A long-time Milton staple, this family-owned business has been satisfying sweet cravings for more than 40 years.

Adonna's Bakery and Cake Studio
201 A Southeast Miracle Strip Parkway, Ft. Walton Beach, FL 32548
(850) 226-7552
I sat down with owner Adonna Zehr for a delightful interview for Emerald Coast Magazine. She’s a second generation baker who started out in a small sweet shop and now her children are part of this growing business. Located in downtown Fort Walton Beach and just steps away from the Heritage Park and Culture Center, Adonna’s Bakery is known all along the Emerald Coast for delicious catering and magnificent wedding cakes. The strawberry buttercream cupcakes are to die for!

Sue’s Desserts & More
202 Ferry Road, SE, Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548
(850) 243-6780
During a fascinating interview with Sue Arnold for Emerald Coast Magazine, I learned about such Filipino delicacies as pandesal and halo halo. What started as a Filipino bakery is now the only place in the area to find authentic Filipino food. You can stop in and graze the buffet all day long and take home sweet treats for later.
Open Monday – Saturday 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, Sunday 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM
